How it Started

Heena Chopra grew up in New Delhi, India, where her Maaji whipped up delicious, traditional foods. Their kitchen was a gathering place for family and friends. It was also Heena’s culinary training ground. Her Maaji showed how to prepare delicious foods with skill and deep love, right down to picking cilantro leaves and blending the family’s masala chai.  

Since December 2003, Heena has been working in the food industry and keeping her own family’s kitchen well-stocked. She loves sharing the traditional Indian food that she grew up with. She is grateful for all the support she has received so far and is excited to bring Maaji’s Street Kitchen to the people of St. Louis!

Inspiration

The heart of Maaji's Street Kitchen is inspired by Heena's mother, the guiding light behind every dish. Growing up, Heena was captivated by her mother’s ability to bring people together over soulful, homestyle Indian food that was as nourishing as it was delicious. The word “Maaji” is an endearing term in Indian culture, meaning "mother" with respect, embodying warmth, care, and authenticity. Every recipe at Maaji's Street Kitchen is a tribute to her mother’s legacy, a celebration of tradition, and a reminder of the deep-rooted connections we form through food. With each meal, Heena invites guests to experience the love and heritage that fueled her journey from her family’s kitchen to the heart of St. Louis
